TPBGC Youth Football Team’s Gain National Spotlight at AAU National Championships

The Takoma Park Boys and Girls Club’s 8 and under (8U) and 12 and under (12U) youth football teams in played in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Youth Football Championships in Paisley, FL on December 4-6, 2009. The 8U team received an at-large bid from the AAU after compiling a 9-1 record in the AAU Potomac Valley League. Although the 8U team lost the regional championship game, based on their regular season record, they were invited to participate in the national tournament and won four straight tournament games to earn the right to play for a National Championship game. The Rams lost a tough game 7-0.

The 12U team won the AAU Potomac Valley Championship which resulted in an automatic bid to the national tournament. The 12U team carried an undefeated record to Florida and also won four straight tournament games – including the semifinal game won on a last second touchdown pass from Ray Lyles to Kwabena Opare-Woods to qualify for the championship game. The 12U team lost the championship game 27-21 to the Houston Jaguars. A team that was undefeated and had not been scored on all year until losing to Takoma Park in a tournament game on Friday evening which proved to set up the rematch in the Sunday afternoon championship game. The 12U championship game was characterized by spectators as a battle of the best teams that was won in the closing moments on a touchdown with 20 seconds remaining. The game was described in the December 14th Washington Post as, “A Mighty Effort That Ended in Defeat”.

Scott Davis, President of TPBGC stated, “The opportunity for our teams to play, and succeed at the national level is a tremendous accomplishment. This was the second consecutive year for the 12U team competing in this tournament. We were nervous about bringing the 8U team, but they proved that they have the heart of a champion. We were excited to be able to provide this type of experience for the kids as it is a unique and valuable learning experience on many levels. We hope that it raises our profile locally and nationally and that it ultimately impacts our ability to continue to attract the kids, parents and sponsors needed to fund these types of experiences.”

Duncan Brent, Commissioner for TPBGC commented, “The national director of the AAU mentioned that she was impressed with the professionalism of our coaches and players and that she anticipated seeing us in the future and would welcome us back.” As a testament to the professionalism of the football program, Mr. Brent also stated, “St. John’s College High School and other local schools have shown great interest in our kids as students and athletes”. The 12U regional championship game was hosted by St. John’s.

The annual football/cheerleading banquet is scheduled at 2PM at Union Wesley AME Church, 1860 Michigan Avenue, NE Washington, DC on January 30, 2010. Please direct fundraising and sponsorship opportunities to Scott Davis at: sc ...
